Yeah, Adams Morgan is right there. There are tons of restaurants and shops there.
Don't be afraid of the metro though. It goes everywhere and is easy to navigate.
BTW, the SE entrance to the zoo is actually in Adams Morgan.

Not much in walking distance, it's a quiet residential area. Are there restaurants and shops in walking distance of the DC Zoo?
Not too much within walking distance - the Metro is inexpensive and easy to use - you can take it to Union Station and there is some interesting shopping there.
There are plenty of restaurants within walking distance but not much shopping unless you walk to Adams Morgan which isn't especially close. There are a few shops in Cleveland Park but not many.
I like Spices, an Asian and sushi place in Cleveland Park and Lebanese Taverna, a Lebanese/middle eastern place in Woodley Park.
Yes, there are restaurants on Connecticut Avenue near the main (upper) entrance of the zoo. There are several restaurants right across the street from the zoo.
The other end of the zoo, the lower entrance, is a short walk to the Adams-Morgan neighborhood as someone else said.
There are a bunch of places next to the Woodley Park Metro station, which is the stop most zoo visitors use. Everything from Italian to Indian to sushi to McDonalds and Baskin Robbins, IIRC. I think most people would like Open City Diner (around the corner on Calvert Street), which is part coffee house, part diner (meaning American style basics, not dirt cheap) and a little bit part bar. http://opencitydc.com/ See Urban Spoon for more ideas and/or WashingtonPost/.com (Going Out Guide).
