A good way to find restaurants that are great for something like a prom dinner and also affordable is to look in an online yellow pages! You can find places by the type of food you all like, atmosphere like fine dining or romantic, and features like live music for a fun and different dinner!
For her prom she wants a sure thing. Best bet is to head to a review site, such as www.yelp.com. If she doesn't see enough reviews to make a decision, or she has a specific geographic area in mind, she could use the restaurant search engine of the Washington Post or similar.

Restaurant Ideas for Prom Fairfax, VA?If you want Italian, I'd recommend La Dolce Vita in Fairfax. Of course, if it's going to be nice weather out, I'd check next door at Sfizi, and see if Lino will have his patio dining set up.
If you want Thai, and you want affordable, it's not in the most beautiful location, but the interior is just fine - Sakoontra out by CostCo off West Ox %26amp; 7100.
If you want Indian, check out Minerva on Route 50. A little pricier than some, but the food is amazing.
The problem with Fairfax is that most places with good food don't have a really tight decor that would be "nice enough for prom," and the places with nice decor kind of lack on the food.
One last resort would be Bonefish Grill in Greenbriar on Route 50 in
Chantilly.
For my prom dinner my group (it was like 5 couples) we went to the Chart House in Old Town, Alexandria. It is right by the water and so nice. The food is great also. It's a bit pricey but it's not insane and we ate there on our lousy high school money :P Have fun!
